Kia Ora!
Golden Bay, located at the top of the South Island, is packed full of spectacular landscapes including Farewell Spit, Wharariki Beach and Cape Farewell. Golden Bay is also the more exclusive northern gateway to the world-renowned Abel Tasman National Park, recently voted the best beach location in Australasia.
However, like many wild and beautiful places, these fragile jewels of Golden Bay are increasingly vulnerable to impacts from environmental pressures. Our response has been to establish a long-term marine conservation programme, the Coastal Ecology Project, to monitor and help conserve the ecological health of Farewell Spit. During the summer we host residential expeditions where volunteers can participate in our research activities and make a real contribution to our on-going conservation efforts.
Taking part in the project is personally rewarding but is also a great way to explore the stunning coastline and fascinating wildlife of this unique place. Spend a week with us as part of your once-in-a-lifetime exploration of New Zealand.
Golden Bay Eco Trails is a corporate member of Education Outdoors New Zealand and Forest & Bird. Safety of our clients is a top priority and we are certified by OutdoorsNZ. Conservation
Golden Bay Eco Trails is a conservation organisation committed to improving the understanding and protection of the local ecology. Throughout the year we carry out monitoring on Farewell Spit. This research is authorised by the Department of Conservation.
During the New Zealand summer period we host week-long marine conservation expeditions at our base in Puponga Port. During the week, participants take part in a range of practical activities and make a valuable contribution to the data collection and analysis. It’s your chance to get involved and have a great time!
